How the map view builds itself

Every photo carries embedded GPS metadata if the camera or phone that took it recorded location — most modern phones do this by default. PhotoShare reads that metadata on upload and plots each photo as a pin, with no manual step required from you.
An album's map view is just those pins aggregated: zoom out and see the whole trip at once, zoom in and individual photos cluster apart into their own markers. Clicking a pin opens the photo directly, so the map works as a second way to browse an album, not just a summary.
Photos without GPS data — a screenshot, an old scan, a photo with location services turned off — simply don't get a pin. They still appear in the album and the timeline view, just without a spot on the map. You can manually add a location to any photo afterward if you'd like it included.
Because the map is built entirely from metadata already in the file, there's nothing to configure. Upload a set of photos from a trip, and the shape of that trip is visible on a map before you've captioned a single image.
